Torch-ed Captain Anyone?

Sorry for disappearing for a while everyone! Who knew that continual exposure to high school environments could result kryptonite poisoning levels of weakness? Seriously, for those of you who are currently going through the flu bug that has been passing around, I salute you. Not fun. I mean, the fever clearly hasn’t broken yet, because I’m hearing Marvel is concluding negotiations with Chris “Human Torch” Evans to play Captain America. I know fevers can last a while, I just can’t wait to break out of this germ-spurred haze of delusions.

What’s that you say? My cold passed a few days ago? And that Captain America story WASN’T a delusion?

King Kirby’s kids come to collect

DC isn’t the only major publisher dealing with the heirs of some of their most famous creators.  Jack Kirby’s children have filed a lawsuit against Marvel and their new parent company, Disney, over credit and profits they feel Marvel never gave out.  At stake is more than just money and credit, however.  Due to the intricacies of copyright law, Kirby’s children may regain ownership over some of Kirby’s creations and gain some control over projects involving characters whom their father helped to create.  Whatever happens here could set some major precedents for many copyright cases to come. With dual interests in Intellectual Property law and comics, I’ll be watching this story closely.

The New York Times has a lengthy write-up on the case from which my information came.

What are your thoughts on this case, the Siegel family’s Superman case, or anything else that’s relevant?

My mind is BLOWN by this. A comic book creator. Selling JEANS. The 90s were far and away the weirdest decade of comics, ever. Screw your foil-stamped, glow-in-the-dark, foldout, peanut butter and jelly secret message die-cut smellovision covers. THIS, effendi, this takes the cake.

Batman and Superman beaten by Lady Liberty

In all of this discussion about Batman and Superman over the last few days, I think we’ve lost sight of something important.  Comics should be fun.  If you’re into comics at all, chances are you have a favorite character.  Everyone has his or her of reasons for liking a character: the costume, the backstory, the personality, the ideals that the character represents, etc.  We can dispute which fictional character is stronger or faster or smarter, but there’s one thing that we can’t dispute. Both Batman and Superman got their butts handed to them by Lady Liberty.
