Snow, Supers and Streamys

February has come and February has gone and thank GOD for small favors. I shoveled so much snow, I could have built my own snowman army, complete with ice fortress. I’m pretty sure I’m with the rest of the East Coast when I wave my white flag at the gray skies. Spring will be greeted with joy at the Jersey Shore, I’ll say that much.

Things remain busy prepping for Season 2. In the past week, we’ve gone through our first writers meeting, which produced a LOT of ideas, ranging from understandable to out-of-this-world-insane. You’ll be seeing a little bit of both when Zeke and company return.

In the meantime, we’ve begun to roll out our first set of Issues wallpapers. Week One features the tag team of Madeline and Edgar, available for free in our Download page! Like what you see? Want to submit your own work? Email us: issuestheseries@gmail.com.

There has been plenty of comic book news this week. What does that mean? Time for some WORD BUBBLES…

-DC is making progress with its movie team, with The Flash finally circling director in the form of the “Green Lantern” movie co-writer Greg Berlanti. So…Superman and Batman have the Nolans, Green Lantern has Martin Campbell…gotta wonder how long it is before we start hearing JLA rumors again.

-What’s that? They’ve already started again? Neeeeeever mind. Wonder Woman and Aquaman are still unavailable for comment.

- Apparently Chris Nolan may be trying to pitch his brother as the new director of “Man Of Steel” (the proposed title). In retrospect, it’s a good thing I didn’t include the following in my DC Movie Drinking Game: “Take a shot every time a new rumor comes up regarding the next Superman movie…”

-Deadpool gets a corp. Answering the question, What is cooler than Deadpool? A TEAM OF DEADPOOLS. Bravo, Marvel.

-You don’t need to look like Mickey Rourke or Jeff Bridges to get a piece of the Iron Man armor. You WILL need to have some cash though. Bidding will go down during the C2E2 convention and online. Head to the Propworx website to start your bidding! http://ironman.propworx.com/

-Mark 2 armor a little rich for your blood? Gotta give legit props to the production team behind the Iron Man 2 action figure line. These have to be among the better looking mass market figure likenesses yet.

-Anyone else find it amusing that The Losers lost their original premiere date? Apparently it’s now June 4th, though I’ve heard they’re now back to the original April 9th date.

-Brightest Day to follow Blackest Night, complete with ring giveaway. Rumors swirl of the top secret Overcast Afternoon.

Way too easy...

-Angeline Jolie has bowed out for a sequel to the unexpected hit “Wanted”. Is it too easy to say the sequel is now dubbed “Unwanted”?

-Weird Casting Rumor of the Week: John Crasinski as Captain America? Seriously Well…I’d say we’re about as far off the path as can possibly be now. Any other Marvel fans sweating yet? Best/worst part? I would totally choose him over Chace Crawford, best known for his role on “Gossip Girl”. Other contenders for the shield include Scott Porter (an almost-cast member of the aborted JLA movie) and Michael Cassidy (who played Lex Luthor’s cloned brother on “Smallville” ironically).

There can be only one...

-Scott Pilgrim vs. The World screened in the Garden State this past week. According to reports over at AintItCool.com, Michael Cera is…pretty much being Michael Cera for most of the movie, but the rest of the cast makes up for it according to early viewer reports. Not So Fast, Dark Knight…Superman Wins!

No amount of batarangs or in-house charges can help you win this time Brucey!

Wasn’t really going to follow up on Michelle’s post regarding Batman Always Wins…but as Stephen King put it, reality is Ralph, and sometimes you just have a story too good to be true.

Superman came out strong this past week with a $1 million auction on Action Comics #1. It seems that the Metropolis Marvel was once again on top of the comic book world…and then Batman swung in and kicked Superman off his perch with some major green. And I don’t mean kryptonite- I’m talking 1.075 MILLION for Detective Comics #27 (Batman’s debut). Batman fans crowed about how that proved…something. Really depends on how rational we’re talking.

Newsarama Discovers Superman True Auction House Winner

Well, it turns out there is TINY problem. It turns out Batman wasn’t the real winner of the auction. Turns out Detective Comics 27 sold for $900,000 with a 19.5 percent in-house fee, while Superman sold for $1 million flat.

What does this mean?

Well Bruce, at least you won in a Frank Miller comic, right?

The Biggest Stories.

spockkirk

I know, I know...

Hi, everybody; I’m sort of the new guy here.

I like words. I like stories. And I like to think comics represent both the smallest and biggest impulses of storytelling, folklore and fiction in us; I like to think the reason that I, at twenty-eight, have yet to put away my childish things is that they have meaning to my life as a whole, as it is and as it will be. I believe pop culture is important, and there’s something about comic books that are popping, especially loudly, right now.

Backing up one step:

So here’s a thought: all of the key, memorable moments in life can be condensed down into three words. Simplify, simplify on down and there’s three words to hit you in the stomach, concentrated just right for each and every moment.

Examples include:

  • “I Love You.”
  • “Be With Me.”
  • “Don’t Touch That.”
  • “Famous Last Words.”
  • “Leave Me Alone.”
  • “Slippery When Wet.”

And so on, and so forth. But my favorite three words of importance, effendi, happen to be found at the end of a whole mess of comic books:

To Be Continued.

The Dark Knight Always Wins

At our writer’s meeting last weekend, an age old debate came up.  It’s unavoidable with a group of writers who enjoy comics.  That debate: who would win in a fight: Batman or Superman?

As a Batman fan I can only point out that Batman always wins.  Batman wins battles that he isn’t even a part of.  Mr. Nap would of course disagree with me on this, being the biggest Superman fan I know.  However, today we have proof: Batman always wins.

Three days ago, as I wrote last time, a copy of Action Comics #1 (8/10 on the CGC scale) sold at auction for $1,000,000, shattering the old record.  At that point in time, advanced bids were being taken on a copy of Detective Comics #27 (also 8/10 on the CGC scale).  At that time, the bidding was over $500,000.

Well, my friends, today was the auction.  Detective Comics #27 sold at that auction for a final bid of $1,075,500, thereby surpassing the 3 day old record set by Action Comics #1.

The moral of this story?  Batman always wins.

Golden Age Strange

Yes, we know, we promised you an update yesterday. Except our one night writer’s meeting resulted in 2 more days of plotting, discussion, and general deviousness. So while we didn’t update you guys, rest assured that we were up to no good – as you’d expect us to be.

In fact, for one of our episodes, script supervisor Eric and I spent the morning looking at Golden Age books on eBay. For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Michelle – the editor. I can’t quite claim to have as much geek cred. as some of the other people around her (coughScottcough), although I’ve gotten better in the last year.

So, yeah, I have to say, the Golden Age was a seriously strange time in comics. Eric seemed most disturbed by the high number of series focusing on young romance. What seemed to disturb him wasn’t so much that they existed – although some of them were really strange – as the fact that they didn’t appear to be marketed towards girls and women.

As for me, I got the most amusement out of what the most famous of superheroes – Batman and Superman – used to do in their spare time. I became acquainted with the Bat Toboggan, which looked far to much like the Batmobile for me. I’m pretty sure that one Wonder Woman cover showed, among other things, what must have been either a Tauntaun or a deformed kangaroo.

As for Superman… Well, I must say, I learned about some hobbies I didn’t know he had. Get your mind out of the gutter! You should be ashamed. I’m talking about scrapbooking!

Never pictured the Man of Steel as an avid scrapbooker. Then again, I guess he had to record his exploits somehow. Not like blogging was an option then. I wonder if he dabbled in decoupage while he was at it…

Update:  You know, I thought the Golden Age was weird.  Then I learned about Superman’s Girlfriend Lois Lane, and Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen.  I forgot about the fact that Silver Age authors may have been dropping acid.  Also, Jimmy Olsen really is a dick in his comic, isn’t he?
